Summary: Crosslinking refers to the chemical method of connecting two or more molecules through covalent bonds. Any substance that promotes or accelerates this process is called a crosslinking agent. Crosslinking agents are now widely used and play an indispensable role in various fields, including medical, industrial, and scientific research.

I. How to choose a crosslinking agent

Crosslinking refers to the use of chemical methods to connect two or more molecules through covalent bonds. Any substance that can promote or accelerate this process is called a crosslinking agent. Currently, crosslinking agents are widely used in various fields such as medical, industrial, and scientific research, playing an indispensable role.

Currently, there are many types of crosslinking agents, such as organic peroxides, amines, oximes, organic sulfides, phenolic resins, organic dibasic acids, polyols, compounds containing multiple unsaturated double bonds in the molecule, and polythiol polymers. The choice of crosslinking agent depends on their chemical reactivity (e.g., specificity for specific functional groups) and other factors related to the intended application, including:

1. Chemical Specificity

2. Spacer Arm Length

3. Water solubility and cell membrane permeability

4. Same or different reactive groups (comparison of bifunctional and heterobifunctional)

5. Spontaneous reaction or photoreactive groups

6. Whether the spacer arm can be cleaved

7. Contains parts that can be radioactively labeled or labeled in other ways

Therefore, for different types of adhesives, appropriate crosslinking agents should be selected to achieve good crosslinking effects. This requires that the amount of crosslinking agent added is small, the crosslinking efficiency is high, and the crosslinking structure is stable; the crosslinking time is appropriate, neither too fast nor too slow; it does not affect construction and use performance; it is non-toxic, non-irritating, and does not pollute the environment; it is inexpensive and easy to accept; it is storage-stable and does not cause the adhesive to agglomerate during storage.

II. Common classifications of crosslinking agents

Crosslinking agents, also known as curing agents, hardening agents, or ripening agents, can transform linear or slightly branched macromolecules into three-dimensional network structures, thereby improving strength, heat resistance, wear resistance, and solvent resistance, and can be used for foamed or non-foamed products.

Common crosslinking agents are organic peroxides:

1. Dicumyl peroxide (DCP): The most commonly used, density 1.08 g/cm³, melting point 42℃, decomposition temperature 120~125℃, refractive index 1.54. The half-life is 10 hours at 117℃, often used with zinc oxide to improve strength and aging resistance.

2. Benzoyl peroxide (BPO): White powder, melting point 103~106℃, very unstable, insoluble in water, slightly soluble in organic solvents.

3. Di-tert-butyl peroxide (DTBP): Slightly yellow transparent liquid, density 0.8 g/cm³, boiling point 110℃, flash point 183℃, refractive index 1.4. The half-life is 10 hours at 126℃.

4. Diisopropylbenzene dihydroperoxide: Light yellow liquid, easily decomposes when heated or in contact with acids and bases. There is also diethylenetriamine (DTA), also known as diethylenetriamine, a colorless liquid, boiling point 207℃, density 0.954 g/cm³, refractive index 1.5. Flash point 94℃, commonly used in epoxy resins, generally added at 5%~10%.

5. 2,5-Dimethyl-2,5-di-tert-butylperoxyhexane: Abbreviated as double 25. There are two types of products, one is a light yellow liquid with a purity of 90%, and the density is 0.85 g/cm³; the other is a white powder with a purity of 50%, and the decomposition temperature is 179℃ (half-life 1 minute), 118℃ (half-life 10 hours).
