Summary: Crosslinking agents are mainly used in polymeric materials (rubber and thermosetting resins). Because the molecular structure of polymeric materials is like long lines, without crosslinking, the strength is low, it is easy to break, and there is no elasticity. The role of the crosslinking agent is to generate chemical bonds between linear molecules, making the linear molecules connect with each other to form a network structure. This improves the strength and elasticity of the rubber. The crosslinking agent used in rubber is mainly sulfur, and accelerators must be added.
I. What is the use of a crosslinking agent?
Crosslinking agents are mainly used in polymeric materials (rubber and thermosetting resins). Because the molecular structure of polymeric materials is like long lines, without crosslinking, the strength is low, it is easy to break, and it has no elasticity. The role of the crosslinking agent is to generate chemical bonds between the linear molecules, making the linear molecules connect with each other to form a network structure, thereby improving the strength and elasticity of the rubber. The crosslinking agent used in rubber is mainly sulfur, and a promoter must be added.
Soluble in aromatics, halogenated hydrocarbons, cycloalkanes, acetone, and various alcohols, slightly soluble in alkanes, and insoluble in water. Chemical properties: It is very stable at room temperature and can be stored at room temperature for a long time. The functional group of TAIC is three allyl groups, which have the general properties of aliphatic alkenes, such as various addition reactions, homopolymerization and copolymerization reactions, Prins reactions, etc.
Under peroxide initiation, TAIC is more prone to polymerization than other allyl groups. When heated above 140℃ in air, it undergoes autopolymerization to become a transparent, hard homopolymer.
II. Are all crosslinking agents toxic?
A crosslinking agent is a substance that can act as a bridge between linear molecules, thereby bonding multiple linear molecules together to form a network structure. It promotes or regulates the formation of covalent bonds or ionic bonds between polymer molecular chains.
Crosslinking agents have different names in different industries. For example, in the rubber industry, it is usually called a "vulcanizing agent"; in the plastics industry, it is called a "curing agent", "maturing agent", or "hardening agent"; in the adhesive or coating industry, it is called a "curing agent" or "hardening agent", etc. Although the above names are different, the chemical nature they reflect is the same.
They are often substances containing multiple functional groups in the molecule, such as organic dibasic acids and polyols; or compounds containing multiple unsaturated double bonds in the molecule, such as divinylbenzene and diisocyanates. They can be added with monomers, and crosslinking occurs when the polycondensation (or polymerization) reaches a certain degree, making the product an insoluble and infusible crosslinked polymer; or a certain number of functional groups (or double bonds) can be retained in the linear molecule, and then a specific substance is added for crosslinking, such as the curing of phenolic resins and the vulcanization of rubber, etc.
III. The difference between a coupling agent and a crosslinking agent
Crosslinking agent: Generally refers to a type of chemical that participates in the crosslinking reaction of resins, causing the active functional groups in the resin to connect with each other to produce a network structure.
Coupling agent: Generally refers to a small-molecule chemical containing three or more hydrolyzable carbon functional groups. A small amount can improve the adhesion of the organic-inorganic material interface. The reactivity of the hydrolyzable groups and the fixability of the carbon functional groups on the surface of the organic material, that is to say, it can form a bridge between the resin and the interface, increasing the adhesion of coatings and adhesives, and the dosage is small. It can also be used as a crosslinking agent for some materials according to the characteristics of its functional groups, but due to its fast hydrolysis speed, it is generally not used. After use, the surface drying time can be controlled from a few minutes to several hours.
