Summary: The main component of chloroprene rubber adhesive is chloroprene rubber, a polymer obtained by emulsion polymerization of chloroprene. Due to its relatively regular structure and the presence of highly polar chlorine atoms, chloroprene rubber exhibits high crystallinity and good adhesion and cohesion at room temperature, making it very suitable for use as an adhesive for bonding various materials such as plastics.

  I. Chloroprene Rubber (CR) Adhesive

  The main component of chloroprene rubber adhesive is chloroprene rubber, a polymer obtained by emulsion polymerization of chloroprene. Due to the relatively regular structure of chloroprene rubber and the presence of highly polar chlorine atoms, it has high crystallinity and good adhesion and cohesion at room temperature, making it very suitable for use as an adhesive. It can be used to bond different materials such as plastics. Binary and ternary grafted adhesives based on CR can solve the bonding problem of PVC artificial leather. The peel strength of CR/MMA binary grafted adhesive when used for PVC artificial leather bonding is >30N/25cm, the viscosity of CR/MMA/SBS ternary grafted adhesive is 0.7~0.9Pa·s, the solid content is 27%~30%, and CR/MMA/NR ternary grafted adhesive can greatly improve the adhesion strength between PVC artificial leather and vulcanized natural rubber bottom, with a strength of over 6.9kN/m. They are ideal cold-bonding shoe adhesives for bonding new shoe materials such as PVC artificial leather, PU synthetic leather, SBS soles, and BR transparent soles. (PVC bonding promoter)

  To address the problem of difficult bonding between rubber parts and PVC leather in shoe production, the surface of PVC leather is treated with treating agent SP-8, and NR adhesive and grafted CR adhesive are used together as adhesives, with polyisocyanate as the activator, effectively solving the problem of bonding PVC leather and rubber parts by heat vulcanization. The addition of treating agent SP-8 increases the bonding strength of PVC leather-rubber to 3.2kN/m. The addition of polyisocyanate also increases the bonding strength of PVC leather-rubber to 3.2kN/m, and the maximum amount of isocyanate is 5-6 parts.

  II. Epoxy Resin Adhesive

  Epoxy resin adhesives (or modified epoxy resin adhesives) are mainly composed of epoxy resin, curing agent or catalyst, and fillers. Epoxy resin macromolecules have epoxy groups at the ends and hydroxyl and ether bonds in the middle of the chain. Hydroxyl and ether bonds continue to be generated during the curing process. Because of this structure of epoxy resin, adhesives formulated with epoxy resin have particularly good properties. When epoxy adhesives are used to bond PVC and polyester fiberglass reinforced plastic (FRP), experiments show that the shear strength of adhesives containing epoxy resin is higher than that of adhesives containing polyester, reaching up to 7.84MPa or more. The peel strength when used for PVC/FRP composites is as high as 160kN/m, and surface treatment can significantly improve the shear strength and peel strength. (PVC bonding promoter)

  A mixed system of polyvinyl chloride powder, 1,2-dichloroethane, solvent, epoxy resin, and curing agent is selected as the interfacial adhesive for hard PVC/FRP. When this adhesive is used in the production of PVC/FRP composite pipes, the maximum usable temperature difference is over 90 degrees, and the maximum usable pressure is over 3MPa, without delamination or pipe bursting, indicating that the performance of this interfacial adhesive fully meets the requirements of PVC/FRP composite products. The interfacial adhesive developed in this project can be cured at room temperature, has low viscosity, is easy to prepare, and does not require special equipment, which is beneficial for industrial production or field pipeline installation. In use, it is important to note that the curing agent components of the adhesive should be added immediately before use, and the prepared adhesive should be used promptly; secondly, the surface of the PVC must be roughened and wiped clean with acetone, otherwise the ideal adhesive effect cannot be achieved. After being put into production, this interfacial adhesive is not only used in pipes, but also in composite storage tanks, tankers and other containers, and has achieved the expected results.

  III. Other Adhesives

  In addition to the above adhesives for PVC materials, the following adhesives are also increasingly valued. Modified urea-formaldehyde resin is used for bonding PVC plastic asphalt felt and cement boards. The peel strength of asphalt felt and cement board bonding is 0.8N/cm. If modified urea-formaldehyde resin is mixed with No. 325 ordinary silicate cement at a ratio of 200/77, the peel strength is 1.03N/cm, which meets the bonding requirements of felt and cement board. After a 24h water immersion test, the strength remains unchanged. Obviously, under conditions where the strength requirements are not very high, using this adhesive to bond PVC plastic asphalt felt is feasible. A direct adhesive for PVC sol—Vulcabond—can improve the bonding of PVC plastic sol to polyester, nylon, and other synthetic fiber products. Vulcabond is a dibutyl phthalate solution containing 25% isocyanuric acid trimer, with an isocyanate content of 3.65%. It is a polyisocyanurate dispersed in a plasticizer that can double the bonding strength of PVC sol and synthetic fibers. The highly reactive isocyanurate groups react with polar groups on adjacent polymers to form crosslinks. This high reactivity makes Vulcabond very sensitive to parasitic reactions. If it is in contact with polar groups such as —OH, —NH, —SH, or H+, its bonding properties will be affected. (PVC bonding promoter)
