1. PVC Selection of Crosslinking Agent
Crosslinking is the process of forming chemical bonds between linear or branched polymer macromolecules. A crosslinking agent is a substance that can cause crosslinking between the macromolecular main chains of a polymer. Crosslinking agents are often substances containing multiple active functional groups, such as dibasic acids, polybasic acids, diamines, polyisocyanates, or compounds containing multiple unsaturated double bonds, as well as sulfur, organic peroxides, and metal oxides. Organic peroxides are often used as crosslinking agents for vinyl resins, unsaturated polyesters, ethylene propylene rubber, silicone rubber, fluororubber, and polyurethane rubber. Crosslinking agents play a significant role in modifying adhesives, improving bonding strength, heat resistance, water resistance, chemical resistance, creep resistance, and aging resistance. Different crosslinking agents have different mechanisms of action. Some react directly with the active groups of polymer macromolecules to produce crosslinking. Others copolymerize with monomers into linear macromolecular chains, and then crosslink between molecules under the action of heat, oxygen, or radiation. Therefore, for different types of adhesives, appropriate crosslinking agents should be selected to achieve good crosslinking effects. This requires that the amount of crosslinking agent added is small, the crosslinking efficiency is high, and the crosslinking structure is stable; the crosslinking time is appropriate, neither too fast nor too slow; it does not affect construction and use performance; it is non-toxic, non-irritating, and does not pollute the environment; it is inexpensive and easily accepted; and it is storage-stable and does not cause the adhesive to agglomerate during storage. 2. PVC Requirements for the Selection of Crosslinking Agents
For different adhesives, suitable crosslinking agents should be selected. The following requirements are placed on crosslinking agents: (1) The active groups of the crosslinking agent can react with the components in the adhesive to form a crosslinked structure. (2) High crosslinking efficiency, only a small amount needs to be added to obtain a stable crosslinked structure. (3) The crosslinking speed is appropriate; too fast or too slow is unfavorable. (4) The best overall effect can be obtained by mixing several crosslinking agents. (5) The crosslinking agent is stable during processing and storage and does not undergo harmful reactions or agglomeration. Non-toxic, non-irritating, and environmentally friendly.
