Guangyuan Ruifeng New Materials - Environmentally Friendly Plasticizer Performance

Summary: Environmentally friendly plasticizers are organic substances that increase the plasticity of plastics, improve the flow of resin during molding processing, and make the products flexible. They are usually high-boiling, difficult-to-volatilize viscous liquids or low-melting-point solids that generally do not chemically react with plastics.

Environmentally friendly plasticizers are substances that increase the plasticity of plastics, improve the flow of resin during molding processing, and make the products flexible. They are usually high-boiling, non-volatile viscous liquids or low-melting solids that generally do not chemically react with plastics. (Environmentally friendly plasticizers)

Environmentally friendly plasticizers are classified according to their function: primary plasticizers (solvent-type plasticizers); auxiliary plasticizers (non-solvent-type plasticizers); catalyst-type plasticizers; and according to their chemical structure: phthalates, fatty acid esters, phosphates, polyesters, epoxy esters, chlorine-containing compounds, etc. Commonly used plasticizers include dibutyl phthalate (DBP), dioctyl phthalate (DOP), epoxidized soybean oil, trimethyl phosphate, triphenyl phosphate, dioctyl sebacate, chlorinated paraffin, etc. PVC is the main end user of these plasticizers. The main applications of plasticized PVC are wires, cables, floor and wall coverings, building materials, automobiles, and packaging materials. (Environmentally friendly plasticizers)

Regardless of the type of environmentally friendly plasticizer, the performance requirements in practical applications are multifaceted, mainly including: low volatility, non-migration, electrical insulation, water resistance, acid and alkali resistance, oil resistance, heat resistance, light resistance, low temperature performance, odorlessness, non-toxicity, antibacterial properties, fuel resistance, etc. These are sufficient conditions for use as a plasticizer. The main properties are described below:

1. Volatility

The difference between a plasticizer and a solvent is volatility. Solvents generally have high volatility and therefore cannot be used as plasticizers. The loss of softness in flexible polyvinyl chloride due to plasticizer volatilization and dissipation is a major problem in practical applications. The volatility of the plasticizer in flexible polyvinyl chloride is related to the speed at which the plasticizer diffuses from the inside to the surface of the product and the effective vapor pressure of the plasticizer on the surface of the product. Under normal conditions, the latter effect is dominant. (Environmentally friendly plasticizers)

By comparing the temperature obtained from the individual vapor pressure of the plasticizer (0.05 μHg) and the heat resistance temperature obtained from the aging properties of the product, it is clear that the volatility of the plasticizer is closely related to the heat resistance and light resistance of the plasticizer. The allowable operating temperature (i.e., continuous use temperature) obtained from the vapor pressure of the plasticizer (0.05 μHg) shows that dioctyl phthalate can be used continuously at 68°C, while dioctyl-decyl phthalate and diisodecyl phthalate can be used continuously at 80°C and 92°C, respectively. Tests show that the volatility of petroleum sulfonate is superior to that of dioctyl phthalate. (Environmentally friendly plasticizers)

2. Migration

The migration of plasticizers to substances in contact with flexible polyvinyl chloride is also important in practical applications. Both migration and volatility involve the diffusion of plasticizers from the inside to the surface of the polyvinyl chloride product. Volatility refers to the evaporation of plasticizers from the surface, while migration refers to the diffusion of plasticizers to the contact layer. Therefore, migration is composed of two processes: diffusion of plasticizers inside the product and diffusion in the contact layer. (Environmentally friendly plasticizers)

3. Oil Resistance

In oil, the extraction of plasticizers is related to the solvation ability of plasticizers to resins and oil resistance. Usually, the diffusion rate of plasticizers is not significantly different, so oil resistance mainly depends on the solvation ability of plasticizers to resins. Generally speaking, plasticizers with a smaller plasticizer-resin interaction constant, i.e., stronger solvation ability to resins, have better oil resistance, and vice versa. 4. Electrical Insulation

The electrical insulation of flexible polyvinyl chloride plastics largely depends on the type, properties, and amount of plasticizer used. Highly polar plasticizers, because they can fix the polymer main chain in a polarized position, have higher electrical insulation. Therefore, chlorinated paraffin, phthalates, petroleum sulfonates, and phosphates have better electrical insulation. For plasticizers with high electrical insulation requirements, the content of ionic impurities in the plasticizer should be minimized. For example, catalysts for esterification reactions are usually detrimental to electrical performance. (Environmentally friendly plasticizers)
