Eco-friendly plasticizers will eventually replace traditional harmful plasticizers - Guangyuan Ruifeng New Materials

Summary: The full Chinese name of DOP plasticizer is dioctyl phthalate, which is an important general-purpose plasticizer. It is mainly used in the processing of polyvinyl chloride resin, and can also be used in the processing of chemical fiber resin, acetate resin, ABS resin and other polymers, as well as in paints, dyes, and dispersants.

The full Chinese name of DOP plasticizer is dioctyl phthalate, which is an important general-purpose plasticizer. It is mainly used in the processing of polyvinyl chloride resin, and can also be used in the processing of chemical fiber resin, acetate resin, ABS resin, rubber and other polymers, as well as in paints, dyes, and dispersants.

Although widely used, two years ago, the EU directly listed three phthalate plasticizers, including DOP, on the list of chemicals to be eliminated. This means that, without special authorization, DOP plasticizer will disappear from the EU market in three to five years. The United States, Japan, South Korea, Australia, Argentina and other countries have also made similar restrictions on the content of DOP plasticizer in toys and other plastic products related to human body and hygiene food, similar to the EU.

1. Estrogenic effects

The World Health Organization points out that phthalates entering the human and animal bodies have estrogen-like effects, interfering with endocrine systems, and are potential endocrine disruptors. In adult males, the higher the concentration of phthalates, the fewer the number of sperm, and the poorer the quality and motility. Women are at increased risk of breast cancer and endometrial cancer. Studies have shown that the higher the concentration of phthalates in pregnant women, the higher the risk of male infants having short penises, congenital malformations, hypospadias, and cryptorchidism.

2. Obesity

A study published in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives, based on data from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, showed that Americans with abdominal obesity or insulin resistance symptoms that can lead to diabetes had higher concentrations of DEHP and dibutyl phthalate metabolites in their urine than those without these problems. Because of this, DOP plasticizer will inevitably be replaced by environmentally friendly plasticizers!

How to identify whether the plasticizer added to plastic is toxic or non-toxic:

1. Place the plastic bag at the bottom of the water. Due to the different specific gravity, polyethylene and polypropylene float on the surface, indicating non-toxicity, while polyvinyl chloride and polystyrene sink to the bottom, indicating toxicity;

2. In terms of appearance, polyethylene and polypropylene are relatively soft and basically transparent, but polyethylene is milky white and polypropylene is white; while polyvinyl chloride plastic bags are slightly yellowish, less soft than polyethylene and polypropylene, and have a slight plasticizer smell;

3. Non-toxic raw materials, polypropylene and polyethylene, feel slippery to the touch, with a waxy surface. They are easily combustible when exposed to fire, dripping like candle wax, with a yellow flame and a paraffin smell. These can be used for food packaging. If toxic raw materials such as polyvinyl chloride and polystyrene, or melamine plastic bags are used, they will feel sticky to the touch, are not easily combustible, and extinguish immediately after removing from the flame, with a green flame and a pungent smell. They cannot be used to store rice, food, etc.

5. Shaking detection method: When buying things, you can hold one end of the plastic bag and shake it vigorously. If the plastic bag makes a crisp sound, it means it is non-toxic; if the sound is dull, it means it is toxic.

6. Touch detection method: You can touch the plastic bag with your hand. If it is a non-toxic plastic bag, it will feel slippery; if it feels sticky, it means the plastic bag is toxic.
