Eco-friendly plasticizers must first have good compatibility with the resin; the better the compatibility, the better the plasticizing effect. Adding plasticizers can lower the glass transition temperature of plastics, making hard and rigid plastics soft and flexible. Generally, eco-friendly plasticizers are also required to be colorless, non-toxic, odorless, light-resistant, heat-resistant, cold-resistant, with low volatility and migration, non-flammable, chemically stable, and inexpensive and readily available. In reality, only eco-friendly plasticizers can meet all of the above requirements; general-purpose plasticizers cannot.

Eco-friendly plasticizers are classified according to their function: primary plasticizers (solvent-type plasticizers); auxiliary plasticizers (non-solvent-type plasticizers); catalyst-type plasticizers; and according to their chemical structure: phthalates, fatty acid esters, phosphates, polyesters, epoxy esters, chlorine-containing compounds, etc. Commonly used plasticizers include dibutyl phthalate (DBP), dioctyl phthalate (DOP), epoxidized soybean oil, trimethyl phosphate, triphenyl phosphate, dioctyl sebacate, chlorinated paraffin wax, etc. PVC is the main end-user of these plasticizers. The main applications of plasticized PVC are in wires, cables, floor and wall coverings, building materials, automobiles, and packaging materials. Eco-friendly plasticizers have the largest usage among all plastic additives. China's total production capacity is approximately 1 million tons, with phthalates being the main plasticizer due to their excellent comprehensive performance and favorable price. The four major producing and consuming countries and regions in the world—the United States, Western Europe, Japan, and China—account for 70%–90% of consumption.

The controversy surrounding eco-friendly plasticizers originated from cling film. In fact, in addition to cling film, PVC products are widely used in areas related to human medical care and daily life, and it is difficult to completely replace them with other materials, such as latex gloves, plasma bags, some blood transfusion, infusion, and respiratory equipment, children's toys, and artificial leather (used in clothing, footwear, handbags, sofa upholstery, etc.). Currently, foreign countries have strict regulations or recommendations for the plasticizers and other additives used in these products, while in China, most of the plasticizers used to produce these products are still traditional types such as DEHA, DOP, DEHP, and DINP. Many animal experiments at home and abroad have shown that these plasticizers are harmful to organisms, but some experts point out that many of these experiments were conducted under specific conditions, and the possibility of PVC products produced using traditional plasticizers posing a hazard to the human body under existing usage standards is extremely low.
