Eco-friendly plasticizer companies need to increase their R&D efforts, develop new types of plasticizers, overcome technological barriers, and regain international market share.
Plasticizers play an indispensable role in providing high-quality plastic products for humanity. However, their product structure is constantly adjusting and changing, new technologies are being developed at an accelerated pace, new products are emerging one after another, detection methods are becoming more advanced, and evaluation methods are becoming more reasonable. Plasticizers are constantly improving in a cycle of "development-application-toxicological testing-risk assessment-redevelopment".
Therefore, the correct use of eco-friendly plasticizers is key to the healthy development of the industry. To achieve this, plasticizer companies should focus on structural adjustments.
Foreign countries are vigorously promoting plasticizers that are considered non-toxic, environmentally friendly, and biodegradable. The terms "non-toxic" and "environmentally friendly" are relative. Examples include DIHCN (diisononyl cyclohexane dicarboxylate), E-168 plasticizer, EBN and BET (a mixture of polyol esters of isooctanoic acid and benzoic acid) plasticizers, and polyesters from the condensation of adipic acid and polyols. Currently, the production of environmentally friendly and non-toxic plasticizers in China faces two major challenges: first, there are many by-products and low yields; second, the output is low and the cost is high. Good products, such as citrate esters, have high costs due to the high price of the catalysts used. In addition, some companies, although they have produced citrate ester plasticizers, do not pay attention to market promotion, and users are unaware of their products, still opting for cheaper, familiar plasticizer products.
The main function of plasticizers is to weaken the secondary bonds between polymer molecules, namely van der Waals forces, thereby increasing the mobility of the polymer molecular chains, reducing the crystallinity of the polymer molecular chains, increasing the plasticity of the polymer, resulting in a decrease in the hardness, modulus, softening temperature, and embrittlement temperature of the polymer, while increasing the elongation, flexural strength, and flexibility.
As the accelerated elimination of toxic plasticizers and the development and promotion of new non-toxic plasticizers have become an inevitable trend, domestic manufacturers need to make great efforts to research new catalytic and separation processes, and quickly bring new-generation plasticizer products with higher cost-effectiveness, greater reliability, and environmental friendliness to the market. Plasticizers are one of the largest categories of plastic additives. Currently, there are more than 200 types of plasticizers worldwide, each with its own physical and chemical properties and different application fields.
Plastic plasticizers can be divided into two types according to their mode of action: internal plasticizers and external plasticizers. External plasticizers are low-molecular-weight compounds or polymers that are added to the polymer to be plasticized to increase its plasticity. External plasticizers are generally high-boiling, less volatile liquids or low-melting-point solids, and the vast majority are ester organic compounds. The plasticizers generally referred to are external plasticizers. Dioctyl phthalate (DOP) and dibutyl phthalate (DBP) are both external plasticizers.
