In recent years, DOTP's market share has significantly increased, while the market share of DBP and DOP has correspondingly shrunk. The main reason for DOTP's market acceptance is its price control. The biggest advantage of traditional plasticizers is user consumption habits and price advantage. In recent years, DOTP's market price has become increasingly close to DOP, and DOTP also has a raw material cost advantage over DOP. PTA is cheaper than phthalic anhydride, and the profit margin is more attractive to manufacturers compared to DOP. In 2016 alone, the newly added DOTP production capacity reached 230,000 tons, and a considerable amount was added through the upgrading of traditional plasticizer production lines. Analyzing all environmentally friendly plasticizer products, epoxy-based plasticizers have the most price advantage. However, due to plasticizing properties and product oiling issues, they haven't been widely accepted by downstream manufacturers. TOTM and citrate-based plasticizers are moderately priced, while others like D-801 and DINCH are quite expensive, comparable to epoxy-based plasticizers.
The domestic DOTP market has experienced a sharp decline. Due to the previous surge, there was a serious overvaluation bubble in the upstream octanol and plasticizer markets, and the downward trend is quite obvious. Related plasticizer products DOP and DBP have also weakened significantly, mainly due to the resistance from the downstream plastics industry to high-priced plasticizers. Industry players generally hold a bearish outlook, leading to a lack of willingness to purchase large quantities due to a 'buy high, sell low' mentality, with more focusing on clearing inventory and hedging risks. Currently, market performance varies. In the East China market, the downward trend is larger due to some manufacturers resuming production and competition from low-priced products in the north, with manufacturers' quotations generally lower than those in the north. In Shandong and South China, manufacturers' supply mainly maintains order demand, and the sales resistance is not obvious. However, due to the decline in raw material octanol, there has also been a significant price adjustment. In short, after a period of high-level decline, the downward trend has slowed, but actual transactions remain sluggish, and manufacturers' inventory pressure has recently begun to increase significantly. It is expected that manufacturers will continue to lower prices to reduce inventory pressure in the future.
Citrate-based products are also gradually being promoted and used, but sales have not increased significantly. The main reason is the lagging domestic standards. Although manufacturers have produced them, due to a lack of emphasis on market promotion, downstream users are largely unaware and still choose cheaper, familiar traditional plasticizers. Developed countries such as the US, Europe, Japan, and South Korea have increasingly stringent standards for the hygiene and health of plastic products and have widely used safe and environmentally friendly plasticizers such as citrates and epoxy acid esters as substitutes.
Plasticizers in PVC often decrease due to volatilization, migration, and extraction, causing the product to harden and affecting other mechanical properties. The property of plasticizers decreasing from PVC products is called durability. The process of plasticizers entering the gas phase from the product is called volatilization, entering the liquid phase is called extraction, and entering other solids is called migration.
