Introduction to Eco-Friendly Plasticizers - Guangyuan Ruifeng New Materials

Summary: Companies need to increase their R&D efforts to develop new plasticizer varieties, circumventing technical barriers and recapturing international markets. Currently, the world's development of environmentally friendly plasticizers lags significantly behind the needs of production and life. With technological advancements, some traditional materials may be phased out. The development of new, environmentally friendly plasticizers that are harmless, inexpensive, and offer good auxiliary effects as substitute materials is a key aspect of the current development of the plastics industry.

Enterprises should increase their R&D efforts to develop new plasticizer varieties, circumventing technological barriers and recapturing international markets. Currently, the world's research and development of environmentally friendly plasticizers lags significantly behind the needs of production and life. With technological advancements, some traditional materials may be phased out. The development of new, environmentally friendly plasticizers that are harmless, inexpensive, and offer excellent adjuvant effects as substitute materials is a crucial aspect of the current development of the plastics industry. 1. Citrate esters

Citrate ester products, as a new type of green and environmentally friendly plastic plasticizer, are non-toxic and odorless. They can replace traditional phthalate plasticizers and are widely used in food and medical instrument packaging, cosmetics, daily necessities, toys, military supplies, and other fields. They are also important chemical intermediates. Among them, acetyl citrate esters have superior performance and wider applications. In addition to being a non-toxic and odorless green plastic plasticizer, it can also be used as a polyvinyl chloride stabilizer and an improver for bonding films and metals. Its adhesive remains strongly bonded even after prolonged immersion in water.

Developed countries such as the United States and the European Union have successively introduced regulations allowing citrate esters to be used as one of the plastic adjuvants for products closely related to the human body and with high hygiene requirements, such as children's toys, sanitary products, and medical devices, and artificial leather.

China began researching and developing citrate esters in the mid-1990s. We have the conditions to mass-produce citrate esters such as tributyl citrate (TBC), trioctyl citrate (TOC), acetyl tributyl citrate (ATBC), and acetyl trioctyl citrate (ATOC), all of which are considered the safest plasticizers and can be used in various PVC products. However, they are more prone to leaching than DOP. Currently, China has independently developed the environmentally friendly plasticizer TBC, which has begun to be used in pharmaceutical products. In the future, it can be gradually promoted in other production industries. 2. 1,2-Cyclohexanedicarboxylic acid diisopropyl ester

1,2-Cyclohexanedicarboxylic acid diisopropyl ester has low migration and is a colorless, transparent, slightly odorous anhydrous liquid. It is soluble in many solvents and has good compatibility with many commonly used PVC plasticizer monomers. It is almost insoluble in water and can be used in many soft medical products such as stomach tubes and infusion bags. It can provide toy factories with an ideal solution that meets safety requirements and complies with new EU regulations.

3. Eastman 168 Plasticizer

Eastman 168 plasticizer, because it does not contain harmful phthalates, has been widely welcomed by the market since its launch. This new type of plasticizer is non-toxic, contains no estrogenic or anti-androgenic substances, no carcinogens, and does not cause peroxisome proliferation. For manufacturers who are looking for alternative plasticizers to produce children's toys that can be put in the mouth, Eastman 168 plasticizer is the lowest-risk option and a simple and easy plasticizer substitute.

This plasticizer meets the highest standards of regulatory requirements, and its non-toxic properties give many toy manufacturers and consumers peace of mind. This plasticizer does not require re-configuration, reducing the risk of costly product recalls and customer complaints due to errors in secondary configuration. Due to its low initial viscosity and excellent viscosity stability and processability, this plasticizer can meet the requirements of high-speed molding production efficiency and cycle time, and ensure consistent surface thickness. 4. Plasticizers for biodegradable plastics

A project partially funded by the British government successfully developed a biodegradable plastic plasticizer for use in polylactic acid (PLA) for films and other flexible packaging, significantly improving the mechanical properties of PLA. Supported by the UK government's Sustainable Development Technology Start-up Program, this project improved the flexibility of conventional hard PLA, increasing its elongation from 5% to 320%. These plasticizers are biodegradable and are used in products at 10% to 20% of the adjuvant amount. This modifier is based on a block copolymer formed between PLA and polyethylene glycol. The modified PLA can disappear in the mixture within 20-25 days. Currently, this type of adjuvant has achieved industrial-scale production.
