TPU Characteristics (Part 2) - Guangyuan Ruifeng New Materials

Release Time: 2020-06-16

Summary: Macroscopic mechanical properties of materials under normal temperature and static load. These are the primary basis for determining various engineering design parameters. These mechanical properties are all determined using standard specimens on a materials testing machine according to specified test methods and procedures, and the stress-strain curve of the material can be determined simultaneously.

5. Elastic Modulus

Macroscopic mechanical properties of materials under normal temperature and static load. It is the main basis for determining various engineering design parameters. These mechanical properties must be determined using standard samples on a material testing machine according to the specified test methods and procedures, and the stress-strain curve of the material can be determined simultaneously. The 300% elongation modulus of TPU material is 7.6 to 33 SMPa. (TPU crosslinking agent, crosslinking agent manufacturer, PVC adhesion promoter)

6. Abrasion Resistance

When materials are frequently subjected to mechanical actions such as friction, scratching, and erosion, causing gradual wear and tear on the material surface. It is expressed as the reciprocal of the wear rate or wear degree under specified friction conditions, and is related to the hardness of the film itself.

7. Flexural Resistance

When a product needs to be used under repeated cyclical stress, attention must be paid to the possibility of fracture due to poor flexural resistance of the material.

8. Yellowing Resistance/UV Resistance

(1) TPU materials exposed to ultraviolet light and oxygen in general environments exhibit aging phenomena, leading to decreased product performance and yellowing of the surface.

(2) References for yellowing resistance testing.

(3) Adding stabilizers and absorbers can also delay the photo-oxidation process of aromatics, but not to the same extent as aliphatics. In the experiment, gray cards are compared, divided into 1-5 levels. After yellowing resistance tests such as Suntest, QUV, or other sun exposure tests, the color change of the samples before and after the test is compared. The best grade is 5, representing basically no color change. 3 or below indicates obvious discoloration.

Generally speaking, grade 4-5, which is only slight discoloration, already meets the requirements of most TPU applications. If no discoloration is required, aliphatic TPU, also known as non-yellowing TPU, must be used. The base material is not MDI, generally HDI or H12MDI, etc., and will not discolor even after long-term UV testing. The aging guarantee is about 2-3 years, depending on the usage environment. 9. Water Resistance

TPU exhibits good water resistance in turbid water and will not undergo significant hydrolysis within 1-2 years, especially the polyether series. The polyester series is prone to moisture absorption. Immersion in 50℃ water for half a year, or 70℃ for 3 weeks, or 100℃ for 3-4 days will cause complete decomposition. It needs to be stored in a dry room temperature environment.

10. Oil and Chemical Resistance

A highly polar polymer material has very little affinity for non-polar mineral oils. It is almost unaffected by fuels (such as kerosene and gasoline) and machine oils (such as hydraulic oil, engine oil, lubricating oil, etc.). The polyester series has better oil resistance, with minimal volume change in oils and fats, and tensile strength even higher than the initial value, which is superior to other materials whose properties decrease. It should be noted that if the mineral oil contains a small amount of water, it will have a negative impact on the film properties to varying degrees.

11. Heat and Oxidation Resistance

When products need to be used in high-temperature (e.g., 70℃) environments for extended periods, the oxidation (aging) phenomenon caused by the selected material reacting with oxygen in the air must be considered. The film can withstand various harsh environments, and generally has a heat resistance of about 130℃ or higher, with polyester having better heat resistance.
