Summary: A material's widespread use is undoubtedly due to its excellent performance, and TPU is no exception. Like cast polyurethane (liquid) and blended polyurethane (solid), TPU boasts high modulus, high strength, high elongation and elasticity, and excellent abrasion resistance, oil resistance, low-temperature resistance, and aging resistance.

A material's widespread use is undoubtedly due to its excellent performance, and TPU is no exception. Like cast polyurethane (liquid) and blended polyurethane (solid), TPU possesses high modulus, high strength, high elongation, high elasticity, and excellent abrasion resistance, oil resistance, low-temperature resistance, and aging resistance. High tensile strength, high elongation, and low long-term compression set are all significant advantages of TPU. The following will mainly discuss the mechanical properties of TPU in terms of tensile strength and elongation, resilience, and hardness. 1. High Tensile Strength and High Elongation

TPU exhibits exceptional tensile strength and elongation. The tensile strength and elongation of polyether-type TPU are far superior to those of polyvinyl chloride plastics and rubber. Furthermore, TPU can meet the requirements of the food industry with little or no additives during processing, which is difficult to achieve with other materials such as PVC and rubber.

2. Resilience is Highly Temperature Sensitive

TPU resilience refers to the degree to which it quickly returns to its original state after the deformation stress is relieved, expressed as recovery energy, i.e., the ratio of the work of deformation retraction to the work required to produce the deformation. It is a function of the dynamic modulus and internal friction of the elastomer and is highly temperature sensitive.

The TPU soft segments are PTMG, PCL, and PBA, with relative molecular weights of 1000 and 2000 respectively; the hard segments are MDI-BDO, with hard segment contents of 48.2% (42.7% for PCL-1250) and 31.7%, respectively, synthesized by a prepolymer method with r0=1.05.

As expected, resilience decreases with decreasing temperature until a certain temperature, at which point elasticity increases rapidly. This temperature is the crystallization temperature of the soft segment, determined by the structure of the macromolecular diol, and is lower for polyether-type TPU than for polyester-type TPU. Below the crystallization temperature, the elastomer becomes very hard and loses its elasticity; therefore, resilience is similar to the rebound from a hard metal surface. 3. Hardness Range: Shore A60~D80

Hardness is an indicator of a material's resistance to deformation, indentation, and scratching. TPU hardness is usually determined using Shore A and Shore D durometers; Shore A is used for softer TPUs, and Shore D is used for harder TPUs. Because the hardness of TPU can be adjusted by changing the ratio of soft and hard segments, TPU has a relatively wide hardness range, from Shore A60 to D80. This spans the hardness range of rubber and plastics, and it exhibits high elasticity across the entire hardness range.

Some properties of TPU change with hardness. For example, increasing the hardness of TPU results in increased tensile modulus and tear strength, increased rigidity and compressive stress (load-bearing capacity), decreased elongation, increased density and dynamic heat generation, and improved environmental resistance.
