Differences between polyether TPU and polyester TPU (Part 2) - Guangyuan Ruifeng New Materials

Release Time: 2020-08-03

Summary: Polyether polyols are polymeric or oligomeric alcohols containing ether bonds in the main chain structure and hydroxyl groups at the ends. Due to the lower cohesive energy of the ether bonds in their structure and their ease of rotation, polyurethane materials prepared from them exhibit good low-temperature flexibility and excellent hydrolysis resistance. Although their mechanical properties are not as good as those of polyester polyol-based polyurethanes, they have a good feel. They have low system viscosity, are easily miscible with isocyanates, additives, and other components, and have excellent processing properties.

Analysis of the reasons for the differences

1. Polyether polyol

Polyether polyols are polymeric or oligomeric alcohols containing ether bonds in the main chain structure and hydroxyl groups at the ends. Due to the lower cohesive energy of the ether bonds in their structure and their ease of rotation, polyurethane materials prepared from them have good low-temperature flexibility and excellent hydrolysis resistance. Although their mechanical properties are not as good as those of polyester polyol-based polyurethanes, they have a good feel. The system has low viscosity, is easily miscible with isocyanates, and other components such as auxiliaries, and has excellent processing properties. (TPU crosslinking agent manufacturer)

2. Polyester polyol

Polyester polyols are mainly products of polycondensation reactions between dicarboxylic acids and dihydric or polyhydric alcohols. Their characteristic feature is that they are high-molecular-weight alcohols containing ester groups in the main chain and hydroxyl groups at the ends, with a molecular weight generally ranging from 500 to 3000. Polyurethane materials based on polyester polyols generally have good mechanical properties, excellent oil resistance, and wear resistance. However, they have poor hydrolysis resistance and poor low-temperature flexibility. The feel of their products, especially at low temperatures, is not as soft as that of polyether polyol-based polyurethanes. Polyester polyols have high cohesive energy and are mostly waxy solids at room temperature. Their viscosity is high after melting by heating, and their miscibility with other raw material components used in polyurethane synthesis is far inferior to that of polyether polyols. 3. Flexible segment

Under the condition of a certain chemical ratio of raw materials, changing the length of the flexible segment has different effects on the properties of elastomers with different soft segment types. Increasing the molecular weight of the soft segment reduces the proportion of hard segments. Due to the lower cohesive energy of ether bonds and the smaller rotational barrier of the bonds, as the relative molecular weight of polyether increases, the chain becomes more flexible, the proportion of soft segments increases, resulting in decreased strength, increased elasticity, and increased permanent deformation. For polyester diols, however, the effect of soft segment length on strength is not very significant. This is because the molecule contains polar ester groups. When the molecular weight of the polyester soft segment increases, the number of ester groups also increases, offsetting the negative effect of increased soft segments and decreased hard segments on strength. In addition, the hydrolysis resistance of polyester-type polyurethanes decreases with increasing polyester segment length, which is due to the increase in ester groups; the hydrolysis resistance of polyether-type polyurethanes increases with increasing polyether segment length.
