There are many types of mildewproof agents; however, few ideal agents that can be widely used exist. As an ideal mildewproofing agent, it must meet the following conditions.

(1) High efficiency, i.e., excellent antibacterial effect. In industrial materials and their products, only a small amount of agent needs to be added or coated to kill microorganisms or inhibit their growth. During the addition or coating process, the commonly used agent concentration is 0.05～0.5%.

(2) Broad spectrum, i.e., it has a killing or inhibitory effect on a variety of microorganisms. It is not only effective against mold but also against bacteria, yeasts, actinomycetes, and other microorganisms. In addition, it is effective not only against one or several types of fungi (or bacteria, yeasts, actinomycetes, etc.) but also against multiple or even all types of fungi.

(3) Low toxicity, i.e., high safety. When used, it does not affect human health or pollute the environment or water quality. Generally, the acute oral LD50 (half-lethal dose) for animals is required to be above 500 mg/kg. It is non-irritating to skin, mucous membranes, and eyes. In addition, subacute toxicity, chronic toxicity, carcinogenicity, and other tests on experimental animals must also meet hygiene requirements.

(4) Long-lasting, i.e., the agent has a long effective period. It can remain undecomposed and effective for half a year, a year, or even longer.

(5) Good solubility, i.e., depending on the requirements of use, some require water solubility, some require oil solubility, and some require alcohol solubility or solubility in other organic solvents. Under normal circumstances, it can meet different requirements.

(6) It does not decompose in response to physical and chemical factors such as light, heat, acids, and alkalis, and has good stability.

(7) Colorless, odorless, and non-corrosive. These are also aspects that must be considered when using mildewproofing agents in general industrial materials or products.

(8) Low volatility. This is usually required, but there are also cases where its volatility is used to achieve mildewproofing purposes.

(9) It can be well combined with the material or product and evenly distributed. However, it does not cause chemical reactions that change the properties of the agent or reduce its bactericidal power.

(10) It does not affect the performance and quality of the material or product. This is a must-consider issue.

(11) Inexpensive, readily available, and easy to promote and apply.
