Summary: Garments made of TPU leather, such as leather jackets, leather pants, and leather skirts, can enhance one's style and create a sophisticated look. Like regular clothing, they require proper maintenance to stay neat. In addition to regular care, wrinkles can be removed by ironing, but proper methods must be followed.

Garments made of TPU leather, such as leather jackets, pants, and skirts, enhance style and sophistication. Like regular clothing, they require maintenance to stay neat. In addition to regular care, wrinkles can be removed by ironing, but proper techniques must be followed. So, how should leather be ironed? What temperature can it withstand?

I. Methods/Steps for Ironing TPU Leather

Leather garments are relatively stiff. For heavily soiled or damaged leather jackets requiring renewal, overall washing is necessary. However, washed leather garments are prone to discoloration and deformation; therefore, appropriate ironing should follow overall cleaning.

Ironing can begin after the leather jacket is dry. The ironing temperature should not be too high, generally controlled between 70-85°C. A leather-specific ironing cloth or dry silk cloth must be used; steam or water should not be used. When ironing seams, use light pressure; use slightly heavier pressure on flat surfaces. Continuously move the iron to ensure a smooth and shiny surface. The ironing order is: inner trim, collar, left and right sleeves, left and right front panels, and back panel. Shape the bottom hem, cuffs, collar, pockets, and pocket flaps. Ironing shiny leather jackets may affect the surface gloss; therefore, ironing should be done before polishing and re-dyeing. Ironing already-treated leather jackets may cause stickiness and scorch marks.

II. Precautions for Ironing TPU Leather

Iron leather gently to avoid excessive heat that may cause deformation. Before ironing, clean the garment and follow the correct order. Unfold the garment immediately after ironing. Collagen protein fibers are the main fibers of genuine leather, accounting for 95% of the total weight of rawhide fibers. The properties of leather determine the temperature during the tanning process, which is an important indicator of the leather's heat resistance. When heated in water, leather undergoes irreversible deformation and shrinkage; the temperature at which shrinkage occurs is called the shrinkage temperature. Heat-induced shrinkage is a manifestation of reduced physical properties. The shrinkage temperature range for most mammal hides is between 58-67°C.

During the cleaning, ironing, and drying processes, if the temperature exceeds a certain level, TPU leather will undergo irreversible deformation and shrinkage. The temperature at which shrinkage occurs is called the shrinkage temperature, a type of super-shrinkage phenomenon, also known as the thermal denaturation of leather. The generally permissible temperature for collagen is 40°C; if it exceeds approximately 65°C, genuine leather will shrink to 1/3 of its original length. During tanning, the tanning solution temperature is generally 25-30°C initially, gradually increasing thereafter.
