II. Process Characteristics

1. Lamination: This technology is the most widely used method by domestic enterprises. Advantages: simple, mature process, and fast production speed (approximately 100m/min). Disadvantages: cannot be used for products with breathability requirements; hard feel, poor comfort; high requirements for non-woven fabrics. Lamination effect is not ideal for non-woven fabrics with low grammage (below 18gsm) and low coating amount (below 15gsm), because the unevenness of the surface of the roll material makes the lamination process prone to pinholes. 2. Hot Rolling: This is the standard process for manufacturing SMS non-woven fabrics using a two-step method. Many domestic enterprises use this process for the composite manufacturing of films and fabrics. Advantages: existing equipment and processes can be used. Disadvantages: the film is made of PE, while the non-woven fabric is made of polypropylene, and their melting points are different, making it difficult for the hot rolling mill to take both into account; the heat capacity of the hot rolling mill causes the composite strength uniformity of the product to be poor at the same temperature and different production speeds; the processing accuracy of the hot rolling embossing roller is also a factor affecting product quality; the hot rolling method has a higher air permeability loss rate for breathable membrane materials (between 30-40%); the production speed is slower. 3. Powder Composite: A method in which hot melt adhesive powder is evenly sprinkled on non-woven fabric or film, and then compounded through heat. Advantages: the use of rubber rollers and smooth rollers for thermal pressure rollers causes minimal damage to the materials. Disadvantages: slow production speed, low production efficiency; the even sprinkling of hot melt adhesive powder is the key to the quality of the product, but the hygroscopicity of the hot melt adhesive powder makes even sprinkling quite difficult, and the sprinkling amount is difficult to control; the melting temperature of the hot melt adhesive powder is high, and the melting temperature of the breathable membrane is low, so the hot melt adhesive powder cannot be completely melted during compounding, resulting in insufficient peel strength and poor surface flatness of the composite film. 4. Hot Melt Adhesive Breathable Coating Composite: Advantages: fast production speed, low air permeability loss rate of breathable membrane materials (between 20-30%). Disadvantages: large equipment investment (a hot melt adhesive breathable coating composite hot melt adhesive system with an effective width of 1600mm costs more than US$400,000); high grammage of adhesive coating (for example, with an angle of 180°, and a strength of 3.0N/inch composite requirements, the adhesive usage reaches 4gsm or more); during coating, the coating head needs to contact the coating material, and the stability and flatness of the winding and unwinding equipment are required; the coating process applies a large tension to the material, while the non-woven fabric and film require operation under very low tension, otherwise it is easy to cause stretching deformation of the material, wrinkling of the composite product, thus affecting the product quality; the operation adjustment is more complex: non-woven fabrics and films cannot withstand high temperatures, while the working temperature of hot melt adhesive is basically 150 degrees Celsius or higher, low-speed operation is easy to cause material burning, causing production interruptions and increased waste products.
