I. Subfloor Key Points
Regardless of the type of base material used for the PVC floor subfloor, if the leveling layer is damaged or the flatness exceeds a 5mm error, the subfloor contractor shall be responsible for the quality.
II. Subfloor Requirements for PVC Flooring Installation
The condition of the subfloor not only has an important impact on the appearance of the installation but is also related to the lifespan and durability of the floor. Therefore, the subfloor should be kept dry, firm, rigid, smooth, flat, clean, and free of dust and grease.
1. Concrete Subfloor
New and in-situ concrete subfloors should meet the standards for installing PVC flooring. The subfloor design should meet the design strength requirements of the building's static and dynamic loads. The concrete subfloor must be firm and completely dry, with a smooth, dense, flat surface, free of bumps, cracks, and other defects. If there is a damp foundation under the concrete subfloor, a damp-proof layer must be installed on the ground to prevent moisture penetration. Damp-proofing additives and curing agents cannot replace the damp-proof layer. Each 25mm thick new concrete subfloor should have a drying period of at least one month. A moisture test should be conducted before installation whenever possible.
Ensure that the surface of the PVC flooring subfloor is free of curing agents, oils, greases, paints, dust, and any other debris that may hinder the adhesion of the adhesive; free of cracks, honeycombs, or bulges. If the surface does not meet the requirements, it should be repaired with a cement mortar leveling layer or self-leveling cement. If the concrete surface has already used curing agents, hardeners, sealants, or release agents, they should be completely removed by grinding, sandblasting, or polishing before laying the floor, as they will weaken the adhesion of the adhesive. 2. Wooden Subfloor
All wooden subfloors must have a ventilation layer of at least 450mm during installation to prevent warping, floor movement, and excessive deformation of the subfloor. New wooden subfloors should be firm and made of air-dried wood, without excessive compression or warping. All loose wooden boards in existing wooden subfloors should be re-nailed, and severely worn or damaged boards must be replaced. If necessary, the floor can be sanded to make the surface smooth and free of undulations. Or cover the subfloor with composite plywood or approved fiber cement elastic flooring leveling layer. The leveling material must extend 75mm around the edges of the boards, with a 10mm margin, and be fixed through the board at a depth of 100 to 150mm.
3. Existing PVC and Rubber Flooring Subfloor
It is recommended to remove existing PVC and rubber flooring. If this is not possible, implement appropriate and sufficient measures to ensure that the old floor meets the standards for installing new flooring. Existing PVC and rubber flooring must be smooth (no deformation or bulging that will affect the installation effect), intact, firmly bonded, and correctly installed on the recommended subfloor. The surface of existing PVC and rubber flooring cannot have any attachments, signs of moisture, alkali salts, or hydrostatic pressure. Thoroughly remove wax and other coatings from existing materials, and replace or repair dents and damaged areas. Installing on existing PVC and rubber flooring will reduce surface compressive strength. 4. Expansion Joints
It is recommended that PVC flooring not cover expansion joints; expansion joint covers should be added at expansion joints.
III. Subfloor Treatment Requirements for PVC Flooring Installation
The subfloor for PVC flooring should be flat, dry, firm, and free of dust and dirt. The construction steps mainly focus on five words: one "flat," two "grind," three "dry," four "sweep," five "suck." "Flat" refers to leveling existing paint, hardened cement, and other protrusions on the ground, filling in pits and hollows to achieve the required flatness; "grind" refers to using a grinder to grind the uneven ground so that the surface thickness difference within two consecutive square meters does not exceed 2.0mm; "dry" refers to naturally air-drying the leveled ground or using heating to quickly dry it, so that the moisture content of the entire ground does not exceed 6%; "sweep" refers to sweeping the ground and all corners clean with a broom or dust mop; "suck" refers to using a large vacuum cleaner to thoroughly vacuum the construction area and the area where the materials are cut several times to remove tiny particles.
