Summary: Many people believe that "the thicker the tarpaulin, the better the quality", but this is not the case. According to the existing classification of various plastic tarpaulins introduced by tarpaulin factories, it is found that the thickness generally ranges from 0.35 mm to 0.8 mm, and the thickness of plastic tarpaulins is determined by the fineness of the yarn, the density of the base fabric weaving, and the thickness of the coating material.
Many people believe that "the thicker the tarp, the better the quality," but this is not necessarily true. According to tarp manufacturers, existing types of plastic tarps vary in thickness from 0.35mm to 0.8mm. The thickness of a plastic tarp depends on the yarn count, the density of the base fabric weave, and the thickness of the coating material.
Choosing a tarp depends on its intended use. Tarps are mainly used for three purposes: 1. Leisure use: no bottom layer, less demanding material requirements, easy to carry, mainly for sunshade and temporary rest in leisure places such as beaches; 2. General outdoor use: with a bottom layer, relatively higher material requirements, poles made of fiberglass, lightweight and easy to carry; 3. High-altitude use: special tarps, poles made of aluminum alloy, the outer layer of the tarp is tear-resistant, etc. We usually choose the second type.
When judging the quality of a tarp, it cannot be definitively said that thicker is better or thinner is worse, as the quality is determined by many factors, such as the surface roughness, yarn quality, fabric density, quality of coating materials, and the ratio of coating materials.
When using a new rainproof tarp, apply an additional layer of seam sealant to the waterproof seam. Between leaving the factory and use, a significant amount of time may pass, so it's important to reinforce the waterproofing. Avoid contact with hard-to-clean items such as carbon ink. For such colored tarps, after cleaning, apply toothpaste or white chalk powder evenly and let it dry to prevent discoloration.
Tarp manufacturers recommend applying an additional layer of seam sealant to the waterproof seams of new tarps to ensure greater durability. If the tarp is dirty, it should be cleaned with cold water; chemical cleaning agents are strictly prohibited to avoid damaging the waterproof membrane on the surface of the fabric and reducing the waterproof effect. Do not step on the tarp with shoes, as this will damage the fabric strength.
Two-person tents are the most commonly used tarps because they are easy to carry and can accommodate three people or even a single person. Warm colors such as yellow, orange, or red are best for the tarp's color; these are easily visible if you are immobile. The tarp needs sufficient cooking space between the inner and outer tents. The space for a single person is generally 17 to 20 square feet. Double poles are usually more stable but are not easy to set up quickly in strong winds. Tarps should not be washed in a washing machine. Poles must be stored separately from the tarp to avoid puncturing the fabric. When storing a tarp, spread it out to dry before packing it away. Even if the tarp wasn't wet during the climb, the climber's breath can cause moisture to accumulate inside, so it's best to spread it out and air it for a while before packing. Fold the tarp irregularly; regular folding will cause creases to harden and crack over time. The tarp material is breathable, so the inside of the tent will not freeze or produce water droplets due to changes in outside temperature. Compared to ordinary tents, new tents are more durable.
