For those who rarely camp or are camping for the first time, choosing a tent with good quality and reasonable price from numerous dazzling products is very necessary. Let's talk about how to get a tent suitable for you.
I. Outdoor Tent Design
Camping mainly provides protection from wind, rain, dust, dew, and moisture, offering campers a relatively comfortable resting environment. The main considerations are structure and number of users.
1. Spatial Structure
(1) Single-room structure tents: The space is designed only for sleeping, focusing on reducing volume and weight. Common types include single, double, and 3-4 person tents, often used by hikers.
(2) Hall-style tents: In addition to sleeping space, a vestibule is added, which is superior in wind and rain protection and also provides space for equipment. It is commonly used in self-driving car tents or disaster relief tents.
2. Layered Structure
(1) Single-layer tents: Advantages are lightweight, economical, small size, and simple manufacturing process, mainly targeting the needs of casual users. However, there are also high-end brands that design single-layer tents to improve lightweight needs, and the price is needless to say.
(2) Double-layer tents: A breathable inner tent is added to the single layer, mainly to solve the problem of water condensation on the inner wall of single-layer tents. Because in cooler seasons, the heat expelled by the human body, under the action of the cold air outside the tent, will condense water droplets on the inner wall of the tent, and the accumulated water flowing down the inner wall will wet the sleeping bag. After adding the inner tent, the outer tent is not directly connected to the bottom of the inner tent, and the heat emitted by the human body will pass through the inner tent mesh, condensing on the outer tent and flowing directly to the ground.
(3) Three-layer tents: A cotton tent is added to the inner tent of the double-layer tent, further enhancing the warmth. This type of tent can be used in environments below -10 degrees Celsius, and the temperature inside the tent can rise to around 0 degrees Celsius. This type of tent is relatively rare on the market and is generally used by professional high-altitude explorers, such as in high-altitude activities like Mount Everest.
II. Tent Materials and Performance
The quality of a tent is determined by design, but more importantly, by the choice of materials. Materials can be divided into fabrics, linings, bottom materials, poles, etc. Generally speaking, for the same fabric number, different densities result in different tensile strength and waterproof pressure. Compared with different fabrics, nylon is thin and light, suitable for mountaineering and hiking campers, while Oxford cloth is thick but heavier, suitable for making tents for car camping or small groups.
1. Inner Tent Material
Generally, breathable cotton or nylon is used. From a usage perspective, nylon performs better than cotton. When camping outdoors, tents easily absorb moisture. Cotton is difficult to dry and prone to mildew, while nylon dries easily and is not prone to mildew.
2. Waterproof Treatment
Currently, the most common is PVC coating, which has excellent waterproof performance.
3. Tent Bottom Material
The choice of bottom material also determines the grade of the tent. The main functions are waterproof, moisture-proof, and dust-proof. Low-end casual tents usually use PE as the bottom material for low cost. Double-sided coated PE, although it has waterproof and moisture-proof functions, is inferior to Oxford cloth in terms of abrasion resistance and leakage. Oxford cloth as the bottom material greatly surpasses PE in terms of firmness, cold resistance, and waterproofness, but the price is much higher than PE.
4. Tent Pole Material
Tent poles are the skeleton of the tent. The quality of the tent pole material not only affects the lifespan of the tent but also its stability. Common materials include: fiberglass poles, general aluminum poles (domestic), and Korean DAC poles (a type of aluminum pole).
